Veterinary Topics
If you're thinking of getting a pet fish, you should know that your veterinarian has a lot of good advice about pet ownership.
Fish can be very rewarding as pets, and you just may be surprised about how much fish actually interact with their owners.
Thanks to advancements in veterinary care, today's cats can live well into their teen years.
It is not uncommon for cats to live to be 18 or even older.
However, in order for cats to live a long full life, they need proactive veterinary care to stay healthy.
Pet Health
Veterinary care is crucial and effective for a wide variety of conditions.
The following is a partial list of some of the most common.
If you do not see your pet's specific condition listed, we encourage you to give us a call so we can personally address your particular concerns.
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis which can be due to wear and tear on joints from over use, aging, injury, or from an unstable joint such as which occurs with a ruptured ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in the knee.
Digestive and Oral Health
Over 85% of dogs and cats have some type of periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease simply means that the gums and bone that hold the teeth in place are being destroyed by oral bacteria.
This preventable disease is the number one diagnosed disease in our pets, yet many animals suffer needlessly.
Bloat and gastric torsion is a serious condition and your pet should be rushed to the emergency room if this occurs.
Certain breeds of dogs with deep chests and narrow waists, such as hounds, bouvier des Flandres, or doberman pinschers are more susceptible to a syndrome of gastric torsion and bloat.
Diseases and Viruses
Feline leukemia (FeLV) is a virus that weakens your cat's immune system.
Unfortunately, when the immune system does not function properly, your cat may be more likely to develop other diseases, such as cancer and blood disorders.
How Cats Contract Feline Leukemia Cats get feline leukemia from other cats.
Zoonosis refers to diseases that can be transmitted to humans from animals.
In particular, they occur when an infected animal passes on bacteria, parasites, fungi or viruses to humans through scratches, saliva, feces and urine.
Today's Veterinarian
Veterinarians solemnly swear to use their scientific knowledge and skills "for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge."
Today's veterinarians are in the unique position of being the only doctors educated to protect the health of both animals and people.
They are not only educated to meet the health needs of every species of animal but they play an important role in environmental protection, food safety, and public health.
Choosing Your Pet
Pets are life-long commitments, and keeping a pet happy, healthy, fed, and well-exercised requires time and money.
In order to pick the right pet for you, one must consider your lifestyle, living situation, and how much care you are able or willing to provide.
Some pets require very little interaction with their owners, while others need almost constant companionship!
Also, everyone in your family or who reside in your home, must be included in the decision.
To explore a specific pet like birds, cats, dogs, horses, small animals, and reptiles, continue reading into this section.
Finding Your Pet
So you've decided what pet is right for you--congratulations! But your work is not yet done.
Where you go to get your pet is just as important as what kind of pet you get.
Here are some suggestions on where to go - and where not to go - in your search for your perfect pet!
A pet shop is a place where dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, reptiles, rodents, fish, and other animals not born and raised on those premises are kept for the purpose of sale to the public.
Rescuing an animal is a wonderful option for some families.
Cats
Working couples and retirees, as well as other families and singles, have discovered that cats are wonderful companions.
Their entertaining antics and affectionate behaviors have endeared these animals to millions of owners.
Cats come in all colors and with all kinds of coats--short, long, or curly.
Some cats are quiet and appear somewhat independent, but all cats need and want attention.
Also, most cats can adapt to a variety of environments.
A cat's air of independence does not mean that it can take care of all its own needs.
Dogs
Select your new dog with your lifestyle and living situation in mind.
In addition to your new family member's personality, consider its temperament, size, and coat as well.
Some breeds have traits that may be objectionable in certain circumstances, such as hyper excitability or a tendency to bark.
Your veterinarian is a valuable resource and should be consulted before you acquire a pet of any kind.
There are two types of dogs--purebred and mixed breed.
The 124 recognized breeds are grouped into seven categories: hound, working, terrier, toy, sporting, non-sporting, and herding.
Exotics
Cats and dogs are amazing pets to have, but you may be considering something a little more.exotic.
Exotic pets may not be as popular as other animals that you are used to seeing as part of a family's household, but they can be just as fun, rewarding, and easy to form bonds with!
Birds, for example, are highly intelligent animals that can be taught to or vocalize.
Turtles, if provided the proper habitat and dietary requirements, can be another great addition to your home with their unique personalities.
