James River Equine Services is a mobile equine veterinarian in the central Virginia area that specializes in the treatment of horses. As a licensed veterinarian in Charlottesville, Dr. Jeffrey Shane recognizes that the health and well-being of your horse is of the utmost importance to you. Because of this, Dr. Shane has been providing compassionate equine care along with veterinary medicine for over 26 years.
Dr. Shane provides many of the same equine veterinary services that horses receive at a full-service veterinary establishment. Dr. Shane can also do a Coggins test and issue health certificates for horses that test negative for this infectious disease. In order to make sure a horse is suitable for a new owner, Dr. Shane does a pre-purchase examination.
This examination includes imaging, digital x-rays, ultrasound, and blood screening. Dr. Shane carries all the equipment to do such tests in his truck. He will also check the horse's lungs, heart, eyes, and will perform a full soundness exam.

Each morning Dr. Shane loads up the truck and heads out to the farms for the day's rounds.
Frequently, a pre-vet student may be riding along with him to see what it is like to be a horse doctor.
Most days end back at the office to return messages, look at x-rays, run lab tests, and get ready for the next day's calls.

I've been with Dr. Shane since 1999 when I purchased my first horse, Ciai.
He was the only vet in Charlottesville willing to travel to Remington, VA to perform a pre-purchase vet exam!
I was a bundle of nerves at the prospect of this horse not passing but he put me at ease, answered all my questions and gave me his honest opinion with recommendations for conditioning her.
