Report
1 STAR Read this before bringing your pet here. My issue is not simply the money. It is the changing prices, poor communication, and the way I was treated when I questioned the bill. On 08/20/2026, my cat KitKats ear started swelling and bubbling up. My regular veterinarian could not see him until 09/17/2026, and I was worried that his ear would continue swelling or that he could suffer permanent damage.
My regular vet recommended Rainbow Veterinary Hospital, and Rainbow was able to get KitKat in the same day. At that point, I was extremely thankful. At the 08/20/2026 visit, I was told we had caught the problem early enough that his ear did not need to be drained. I was told to give him the prescribed medications, clean his ears, and that the swelling should go down, although his ear might eventually have a cauliflower appearance.
I was also told he had a yeast infection in both ears and was advised to avoid chicken and beef because a food allergy could potentially be contributing to the ear problems. I took that advice seriously. As soon as I got home, I purchased chicken- and beef-free food and started following their treatment plan. That first visit cost me $313.66, including:
$160.00 emergency office visit
$47.50 ear cytology
$37.00 Revolution Plus
$30.68 Tresaderm
$23.48 Mal-A-Ket Plus Triz Flush
$15.00 Prednisolone
Unfortunately, despite following the treatment plan, KitKats ear continued swelling until it had basically ballooned to its full capacity.
I returned to Rainbow on 09/11/2026. This time, I was told that the yeast infection was only small, and the discussion changed to either draining the ear or doing surgery. I specifically asked about the cost because I wanted to understand what I was agreeing to. I was told by the veterinarian herself that there was only about a $100 difference between draining it and surgery, and I was told surgery would be around $740.
I was then told bloodwork would be about another $100. That put what I was expecting at roughly $840 before any additional boarding I personally chose. I agreed because I wanted KitKat treated correctly and safely. I also specifically asked about him staying overnight because surgery was not expected to happen until approximately 9:00 PM, and I live more than an hour away. I was told he could stay overnight and that there would be no additional charge for that initial overnight stay.
I specifically double-checked this, and my partner was present for the conversation. Because I was concerned about fluid leaking from the ear and properly caring for him immediately after surgery, I later chose to leave him longer, through Sunday morning. I understood that the additional boarding I chose would cost extra, and I have never disputed those extra boarding charges. A few minutes after speaking to the veterinarian, a technician came back with an estimate of $1,085.00.
That was immediate sticker shock because I had just been told approximately $740 for surgery plus about $100 for bloodwork. I questioned the $1,085 estimate immediately. I was told that the final total should be lower because certain items on the estimate would not cost as much, some medication charges would be lower, and I would not be charged for an E-collar because I had brought my own. I specifically asked whether that meant I should receive money back from the $1,085 deposit, and I was told yes.
I paid the $1,085.00. After surgery, Rainbow actually sent me written updates about KitKat, which I appreciated. On 09/12/2026, I received a message from their overnight technician stating that KitKat had done well overall but had developed a mild fever and had not eaten much or urinated yet. That same message gave me an updated bill total of:
$974.70
The employee specifically stated that the $974.70 total did not take my deposit into consideration and that it included his surgery and medications to go home.
Rainbow then discovered tapeworms and asked permission to give KitKat Drontal.
Their message told me the additional medication would cost $22.00. I agreed. The final invoice actually lists the Drontal at $21.22. So at that point, I had written communication from Rainbow stating a running total of $974.70, followed by approximately $22 more for Drontal.
However, when everything was finished, my final bill dated 09/13/2026 came to $1,082.92. Out of the $1,085.00 I had paid, my refund was only:
$2.08.
For transparency, their final $1,082.92 invoice includes charges such as $381.50 for the aural hematoma surgery itself, $113.00 for presurgical bloodwork, $88.00 for the emergency recheck, $87.00 for two 12-hour medical boarding charges, $60.50 for anesthesia, $54.80 for sutures, $62.50 for Zorbium, $36.00 for ketamine, $140.00 in additional injectable medications, $23.40 for gabapentin, $15.00 for prednisolone, and $21.22 for Drontal, along with the other listed services.
My complaint is not that the numbers on the final invoice fail to add up. My complaint is that what I was verbally told, what I was led to expect, the $1,085 estimate, and even the $974.70 written running total did not line up in a clear or understandable way. When I went to question this at the front desk around 9:00 AM, I was not looking for a fight. I wanted somebody to explain how I went from being told approximately $740 for surgery plus around $100 for bloodwork, to being given a $1,085 estimate, then being told in writing that the running total was $974.70, and finally ending at $1,082.92.
Instead of getting a clear explanation, I felt like I was met with attitude and basically told that this was the estimate, this was my change, and that was the end of it.
Then, when I returned to get KitKat, I again tried to discuss the situation and again felt completely dismissed. At that point I said that I would be leaving reviews because I had been given multiple different numbers and did not feel I was being treated respectfully.
Instead of anyone attempting to sit down, explain the situation, or address my concerns, I was told my records would be printed so I could take KitKat back to my regular veterinarian to have his sutures removed. That especially bothered me because I had already paid Rainbow for his treatment and follow-up. I told the technician that I intended to return to Rainbow for the suture removal because it was part of the treatment I had already paid for.
I was then told a note would be left in my chart for the manager. The most frustrating part is that this did not start as a negative experience. On 08/20/2026, I was genuinely grateful that Rainbow saw KitKat immediately when my normal vet could not. Some of the staff who cared for him during hospitalization also sent thoughtful updates about him, and I appreciated that. But good medical care does not excuse poor communication about money or rude treatment when a customer asks legitimate questions.
I spent $313.66 on 08/20/2026 and another $1,082.92 for the September treatment, for a total of $1,396.58 with this hospital in less than a month. I was not arguing over whether I could afford another $50 or $100. I was asking why the numbers I was being told kept changing and why nobody seemed willing to clearly explain it. That is what makes this experience so disappointing. When someone is already stressed because their pet needs surgery, the last thing they should have to deal with is unclear pricing followed by attitude when they ask questions about it.
I have kept the invoices, written messages, estimates, medical records, and documentation of my interactions. The dates and dollar amounts in this review come directly from those records.
Based on how the billing concerns and my questions were handled, I cannot recommend Rainbow Veterinary Hospital and will not trust them with my pets again after KitKats remaining follow-up care is completed.
