MVMC was started in 2009 as Maine Veterinary Referral Center by Dr. Alan Potthoff. Dr. Potthoff had previously owned the Animal Neurology Clinic in Portland. When he moved the hospital to Scarborough, his dream was to build a premier multi-specialty hospital all under one roof. Our 15,000 square foot facility holds a unique story: It was designed by Dr. Potthoff's daughter, Jocelyn, when she was a child.

Jocelyn's idea for the hospital's floor plan centered around the idea of a courtyard, inspired after a family vacation to Europe where she and her mother marveled at the beautiful architecture. She originally drew the plans for the hospital for a school project, where it won an award. Later, when it came time to design this building, her original ideas were used.

The hospital was constructed with the objective of keeping both patients and clients comfortable while also facilitating collaboration between all specialties, and our building also housed the first-ever veterinary MRI in northern New England, as well as a helical CT.
